County Commissioners Deny Canton Street Petitions

Department :Commissioners
Type :Announcements

The Norfolk County Commissioners have denied petitions by the Town of Westwood for changes to the layout and traffic engineering changes to portions of Canton Street in Westwood.

The petitions, which were the subject of two contested public hearings, were ordered denied without prejudice based on findings that the petitioners did not sustain their burden of showing that common convenience and necessity required the proposed alterations.

The decision of the Commissioners, Chairman Francis W. O’Brien of Dedham, John M. Gillis of Quincy, and Peter H. Collins of Milton, was unanimous.

Proposals for reengineering of Canton Street have been advanced in relation to the pending Westwood Station development and existing traffic management issues. Canton Street is a County way, and part of the regional transportation network.  Alteration, relocation, and discontinuance of County ways are within the County Commissioners’ jurisdiction.

Copies of the petitions, the Commissioners’ decision and related material are on file at the Norfolk County Engineering Department at 649 High Street, Dedham (tel: 781-461-6128).
